Meryl Sweeney, M.EdI teach fifth grade English Language Arts at Conners Emerson School, and have been in my current position since 2011. Prior to that, I taught French at Pemetic Elementary School and then spent a year living in Nashville, Tennessee, where I earned a M.Ed in Learning & Instruction from Vanderbilt University.
Our fifth grade classroom is a community of learners. Using the workshop model, we grow by practicing new skills, trying new strategies, and giving one another feedback. We value risk taking, and self-reflection. My role is like that of a guide. I read and write alongside my students. I tailor instruction so that each student receives the next steps for which he or she is ready. My goals are to give all students agency and independence, and I try my best to offer high-interest assignments as well as real, authentic audiences. This summer, I was lucky enough to attend the International Literacy Association Annual Conference in Boston. I heard many inspiring speakers, met authors I admire, and learned a lot. I have lots of exciting things planned for the year ahead. Sharpen your pencils, kids! |
